A non - LTE analysis of the spectra of two narrow lined main sequence stars in the SMC

چکیده

An analysis of high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra of two B-type main sequence stars, NGC346-11 and AV304, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), has been undertaken, using the non-LTE tlusty model atmospheres to derive the stellar parameters and chemical compositions of each star. The chemical compositions of the two stars are in reasonable agreement. Moreover, our stellar analysis agrees well with earlier analyses of H ii regions. The results derived here should be representative of the current base-line chemical composition of the SMC interstellar medium as derived from B-type stars.

Chemical evolution of high-mass stars in close binaries. I. The eclipsing binary V453 Cygni

The eclipsing and double-lined spectroscopic binary system V453 Cygni consists of two early B-type stars, one of which is nearing the terminal age main sequence and one which is roughly halfway through its main sequence lifetime. Accurate measurements of the masses and radii of the two stars are available, which makes a detailed abundance analysis both more interesting and more precise than for...

Iron abundances from optical Fe iii absorption lines in B-type stellar spectra

The role of optical Fe iii absorption lines in B-type stars as iron abundance diagnostics is considered. To date, ultraviolet Fe lines have been widely used in B-type stars, although line blending can severely hinder their diagnostic power. Using optical spectra, covering a wavelength range ∼ 3560 – 9200 Å, a sample of Galactic B-type main-sequence and supergiant stars of spectral types B0.5 to...

Puzzling wind properties of young massive stars in SMC-N81

We present a quantitative study of massive stars in the High Excitation Blob N81, a compact star forming region in the SMC. The stellar content was resolved by HST and STIS was used to obtain medium resolution spectra. The qualitative analysis of the stellar properties presented in Heydari-Malayeri et al. (2002a) is extended using non-LTE spherically extended atmosphere models including line-bl...

The VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars: atmospheric parameters and rotational velocity distributions for B-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds⋆

Aims. We aim to provide atmospheric parameters and rotational velocities of a large sample of Oand early B-type stars, analysed in a homogeneous and consistent manner, for use in constraining theoretical models. Methods. Atmospheric parameters, stellar masses and rotational velocities have been estimated for approximately 250 early B-type stars in the Large (LMC) and Small (SMC) Magellanic Clou...

Chemical abundances from Magellanic cloud B stars

In recent years, B stars have been established as reliable tracers of present day abundance patterns. They yield an independent set of abundances from He to Fe which can be cross-checked against other sources such as H ii regions and cool supergiants. In this paper, we present purely spectroscopic analyses of 9 non-supergiant B stars (13 < mV < 15), 5 of which located in the young populous clus...
